Best Thing You Can Do with Your Money During Divorce

Jane just found out her husband wanted a divorce after ten years of marriage. Jane has three kids and works full-time but doesn’t make a ton of money. It would be very difficult to make ends meet without her husband’s salary.

Understandably, Jane’s scared and hurt. Her marriage is ending, her love is leaving her, and she doesn’t have enough money.

Thankfully, Jane’s a planner. She knows the only way she’ll get through this is to take control and plan things out.

First thing Jane starts with is her money. Makes sense since money is how she’ll be able to take care of her kids.

So, what’s the best thing Jane can do with her money while she’s getting divorced?

The best thing we’ve found, having helped thousands in Utah with divorce, is this: create a super thorough monthly budget.

By “super thorough” I mean a budget that accounts for every dollar coming in and going out. No exceptions.

Jane would lay out every single cent coming in from every source, and figure out every cent going out every month.

This will take some time and effort. You’ll mess it up at the beginning, but within about three months, you’ll have almost all the kinks worked out.

Make sure you plan for everything in advance and put it in your monthly budget. Examples of what I’m talking about are things like: birthdays, holidays, school supplies, car repairs, etc. Plan everything and put it in your monthly budget.

Why is a monthly budget the best thing you can do with your money during divorce?

Because you can’t get a good handle on money without a budget. You can’t get yourself through divorce and be successful with money if you don’t plan every cent that comes in and goes out.

A budget gives you control over your money, not the other way around. And once you have control, you can do what you need to do to make things work for you and your kids.

If you don’t have control, you won’t make good money decisions for you and your kids.

You can do this, and it all starts with your monthly budget.
