# Divorce Lawyers and Jargon/Legalese: What to Know | Brown Family Law

Turns out attorneys who use jargon/legalese are often doing so because they’re insecure. Using legalese is more about the attorney trying to sound smart than about communicating clearly with clients or the court.

## Here’s a hint for those looking to hire a family lawyer…

If the attorney uses legalese and you can’t understand what the attorney’s saying, find someone else.

You’re probably talking to an insecure attorney who is low on the lawyer totem pole.

Find someone who talks to you in a way you can understand. It takes a lot of work and practice to explain difficult legal ideas to non-lawyers. Find someone who’s put in the time and practice to communicate clearly.

In the end, you’ll probably be happy you did.
