Consider These Details Before Discussing Divorce with a Child

If you are faced with divorce, this is one of the most difficult things you will ever go through. And while you have to worry about yourself, you also need to think about how it will impact your child or children.

At some point, you need to discuss the divorce process with your child. This may sound simple on the surface, but it can be extremely difficult once the time finally comes.

Here are several things you can do to make the situation easier on yourself:

— Write down what you want to say. This is one of the best things you can do, as it ensures that you stay on topic and don’t leave out any of the most important details.

— Schedule your talk. If you are the type who continually puts things off, you need to schedule time to speak with your child about the divorce.

— Be ready to answer questions. While you may have a good grip on the process, your child may not feel the same way. This is particularly true among younger children. It’s essential that you are ready to answer any and every question.

Along with the above, there is one last thing to remember: you are never truly done discussing the divorce. Just because you have a single conversation does not mean you won’t have to discuss this again in the future.

Your child needs special attention during the divorce process. Make sure you and your former partner are familiar with the best steps you can take during this difficult time.
