I’m Taking the Kids out of Town; Do I Need to Tell my Ex Where We’re Going?

You’re divorced, and you feel free.

Your ex can’t micromanage your life anymore.

It’s liberating.

But, you have kids together, and you want to leave town on a trip for a few days.

Do you need to tell your ex where you and the kids will be? That feels sort of micromanagey.

Really, it all depends on your relationship with your ex.

If you have a good relationship, if there’s some normal level of trust between the two of you, then you won’t need to share your travel plans.

It won’t be that big a deal.

If you have a bad relationship in which there is very little trust, then your ex may want you to provide an itinerary.

In the bad-relationship scenario, I usually counsel clients that you don’t need to provide an itinerary if you’ll be out of town but still in Utah.

In other words, if you’re going to St. George for a long weekend, don’t bother sharing your travel plans.

Now, if you go out of state, then I counsel clients to provide a basic itinerary.

Here’s what I mean by basic:

  1. The city where you’ll be.
  2. How long you’ll be there.
  3. A phone number for emergencies (cell # is fine).
