Marco Polo and Utah Divorce

Everyone knows that technology always changes.

Not a day goes by that there aren’t 1700 new apps to download and play with.

Almost none of them actually become popular, though, so we never get to know them or remember their names.

Marco Polo seems to be an exception.

Marco Polo is a video messaging app that allows you to communicate with selfie videos instead of text.

My wife uses it all the time. Her family uses it. She has a girlfriends’ group named “Moms Gone Wild” in which there are hundreds of these selfie videos back and forth.

So, what does Marco Polo have to do with Utah divorce you say?

Well, texts, emails, and social media posts are a rich source of evidence in divorce.

Send naughty texts to the person you’re having an affair with. There’s a good chance that will find its way in to your divorce case.

Your spouse emails a friend about how he or she is hiding money from you. There’s a real chance that will be used at trial.

I can see Marco Polo conversations being used in much the same way.

Example 1: if your spouse has long conversations with a lover and you happen upon those videos, you better believe you’re going to use them in court.

Example 2: You and your soon-to-be ex use Marco Polo, and you say some very hurtful, vile things in anger. That video, with all its video impact, will find its way in front of a judge.

Believe me, bad videos are worth their weight in gold in divorce. They pack so much more punch than an email or a text.

The right video can literally win a case.

With this in mind, here’s a piece of advice: Don’t use Marco Polo if you are going through a divorce, or you think there’s a chance you’ll get divorced in the near future.

And if you do use Marco Polo, please, be careful. Don’t be mean. Don’t be a jerk. Don’t say things you wouldn’t want a judge to see.

Those videos could really come back and bite you.
