Mediation may Facilitate A Smoother Divorce Process

Couples in Utah who are considering a divorce and would like to work together to avoid a courtroom battle may be interested to know that mediation is available to help them achieve this goal. Mediation is a process where a neutral third party meets and discusses with each individual to determine what their expectations and goals are for dividing marital property, and if children are involved, custody and visitation can also be addressed.

Mediation can be a valuable tool for couples to engage in a non-threatening, less stressful environment to openly communicate on issues in dispute. Because each couple will have circumstances unique to their situation, mediators can guide the couple to a goal based on their specific needs and desires. Couples may only be able to resolve some of their issues, but this means less time that may need to be spent in the courtroom.

Both parties involved in the divorce should be able to respect each other’s requests and willing to work together in a cooperative and courteous manner. This is even more important for couples with children, as working as a team can be especially beneficial when determining matters of custody and visitation.

Couples who are considering ending their marriage might be interested in going through with mediation. Individuals could contact an attorney to review their options and find out if mediation may help in their situation. An attorney can address questions and concerns that a person has about mediation and the divorce process and refer an individual to a mediator.
