Amicable Divorce through Divorce Mediation in Utah

When most Utah residents think of divorce, they tend to think of a nasty Hollywood style of court battle with years’ worth of conflict and emotional stress. There is another side to that coin. An amicable or mutually beneficial split can be labeled as becoming “unmarried” through divorce mediation.

The difference between divorce and getting unmarried seems to be the uninformed notion that all divorces are bad and emotionally painful. As children, we might have seen divorcing couples who became enemies and were always mean to each other. As adults, we now know that it does not have to be like that. If the couple entered the marriage in love, then it is possible to end it respecting that fact.

Divorce mediation can help in the early stages of a divorce to set ground rules of how the divorce will go. Working together for the greater good of the family may lead to the happily-ever-after that most couples are looking for after the marriage is over. This could help eliminate the emotional roller coaster that is generally associated with divorce. Some couples feel a sense of failure while many feel angry, depressed and even shame as part of the stigma of divorce.

This is not to say that all marriages end in a relentless battle over property and children. One way to ensure that everyone feels that the couple split amicably is through divorce mediation. The consensus is that many Utah couples just want to “unmarry” their spouse because they have discovered they make better friends than a married couple and they wish to part on friendly terms instead of going through the usual unpleasantness of a formal divorce.
