3 Tips to Save Money During a Divorce

Divorce is growing closer. You and your spouse have talked about it, and you know it’s coming. You don’t have kids, which makes it less complicated than it would be otherwise, but you still do have a lot to work out.

For example, there’s the financial side. While you both agree that it’s the right move to split up, you also want to see if there are any ways that you can save money. Below are three things that you may want to consider.

1. Don’t Withhold Any Information.

Don’t try to hide assets from your spouse. Don’t misrepresent your income. Don’t lie about your debt.

Instead, be open and honest as you talk about where you both stand. Provide information freely and easily, speeding up the process. This way, you don’t waste valuable time — which is money, if you have to keep going back to court — fighting over what is really there. You’re both concerned about getting your fair share. The best way to do it is though honesty from the very beginning.

2. Keep Lines of Communication Open.

Similarly, it’s important to make it easy for your spouse to talk to you. Some people don’t like talking if they’re not on good terms, so they go through others and drag the process out. This can get expensive and, like lying about assets, it wastes time.

It’s understandable that it may be hard to talk to your spouse face-to-face, even if you both agreed that you want a divorce. That’s fine. Just look for other ways to talk that are free and easy. Send a text message. Write out an email. Talk on Facetime. Don’t make everything harder than it has to be by going through a middleman or refusing to talk at all.

3. Pick Your Battles.

You and your spouse probably aren’t going to agree on how to divide assets the first time through. You’ll both want some of the same items. They could be major items, like your home, or minor things, like a piece of art you bought on vacation.

Spending time and money fighting over assets may be worth it in some cases, but pick your battles. Don’t fight over minor items out of spite. Don’t assume you’ll get every last thing you want. Decide if there are things you’re willing to give up in one area in order to get more in another area.

Work for a Smooth Divorce

Above all else, work with your spouse to facilitate a smooth divorce. It’s faster and cheaper when you’re working together, not against one another. This isn’t always easy, but it literally pays to force yourself to take on this mindset, even when it’s hard. If you’re dedicated, you can wind up with the best possible outcome.
