How to Get out of Domestic Violence: Have a Plan

Unfortunately, domestic violence happens. It happens far too often.

We’ve helped hundreds of people, both women and men, get out from under violent, abusive marriages.

Getting out is usually the hardest part. It’s dangerous. It’s scary. It’s disorienting.

What I’ve found that really helps our clients is having a plan.

You think through every part of leaving. How you’ll leave. When you’ll leave. How you’ll take the kids. What items you’ll take with you. How much money you’ll have on you when you leave. Which car you’ll take. Where you’ll go after you leave. Who will you tell about leaving. Whether you’ll have the cops, or a trusted friend, with you to keep you safe. Where your spouse will be when you leave.

Plan everything, then pick a date and stick to the plan.

A plan help give you a sense of control, which you’ll need in order to feel confident so you can get out. A Plan will also help you recruit people to help you, and you’ll need people to help.

So, please, make a plan and get away from your abuser. You can do this.
