Three Ways to Save Money on Your Divorce

Having enough money to take care of yourself and your kids is a major concerns for 100% of my clients.

And having enough money to afford a divorce and a divorce attorney is another constant worry.

So, what are the three easiest and most effective ways to save money on your divorce?

  1. Get your finances and financial documents in order.

Before you meet with a divorce attorney, gather and organize all your financial documents.

I mean all documents about your savings, investments, taxes (at least the last two years), debts, income, inheritances, real property, etc.

This will give you a good starting point for a fruitful discussion with your divorce attorney.

It will also save your attorney quite a bit of time when you start your divorce. And saving your attorney time saves you money.

  1. Hire the right divorce attorney.

Hiring the right attorney will save you lots of money.

Hire one that likes to fight just to fight, and your divorce will take forever and cost a boatload.

Hire one that gets along with his or her colleagues and negotiates well, but will put on boxing gloves and punch people in the face if necessary, and you’ll save months of time and thousands of dollars.

Hire an attorney that work exclusively in divorce, and you’re more likely to obtain your ideal results.

Hire an attorney you like, trust, and respect, and you’ll get along better, have better communication, and reduce costs.

  1. Be nice.

“Be nice” is my #1 rule in divorce.

Being nice doesn’t mean you roll over and play dead. No, you fight for what you think is best for you and your kids.

Being nice means you can (and should) fight, and, at the same time, be as good as possible to your spouse, your spouse’s attorney, and your judge.

Being nice to your spouse during will save you money and get your better results by: (1) bringing you the respect of your judge and commissioner, (2) tamping down emotions so you and your spouse negotiate well, (3) helping your attorney better represent you in court and in mediation, and (4) taking less time to complete your case because you aren’t fighting about issues that don’t matter and don’t help you obtain your goals.

Be nice: you’ll never regret it.
