What Can You Expect from Divorce Mediation?

More and more people are considering the benefits of divorce mediation as opposed to a traditional approach. While there are reasons to look into this, you don’t want to go into the process blind.

With divorce mediation, a mediator acts as a neutral party with the goal of pushing the process forward one step at a time. This person is not there to make decisions or force one party into doing something. Instead, they mediate all meetings in an attempt to help both sides reach an agreement.

During the first meeting, the couple and mediator discuss all the issues at hand. This gives everybody an overview of what is to be accomplished.

During each subsequent meeting, discussions are based on how to compromise so that both parties are happy with the end result. The mediator provides assistance by sharing knowledge of how divorce issues are typically handled by the court system. This gives both people a better idea of what would happen if they were to abandon the mediation process.

The goal of all parties involved is to reach an agreement. Once this happens, the mediator is staffed with the responsibility of creating the agreement for review by both parties.

You never know what will happen during divorce mediation, but this is a good alternative to the traditional court process. As somebody faced with this, make sure you have a clear idea of what to expect during each meeting. This can help you prepare for what’s to come, while allowing you to make decisions that put you in a positive position moving forward.
